The Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) Service is for Isle of Wight residents, aged 18+. The support provided by an ISVA will vary from case to case, depending on the needs of the client and particular circumstances.
The service has a dual role of helping individuals to cope with the impact of recent or historic sexual abuse and assisting their recovery. With various referral pathways we offer a client led service providing victims with comprehensive information on the process of reporting their crime to the police, whilst recognising not all victims choose to do so. Victims have a range of complex issues and multiple needs therefore the ISVA treats each case individually. Support includes:
- Emotional support leading to improved long term health & well being
- Raising awareness of the criminal justice system & legal rights ensuring victims feel fully informed
- Ensuring victims have a positive experience of the criminal justice system
- Referrals & signposting to a range of therapeutic services
- Attendance and support at court visits and throughout trials
- Accompanying victims to professional appointments with the aim of empowering them to reintegrate and recover
- Exit strategy plans ensuring victims have a range of support networks allowing them to reintegrate with their families, professional and personal groups
Length of support will vary, with criminal justice cases requiring extended engagement.
The Isle of Wight island status has a unique impact on resource and support required. The SARC forensic unit is off island therefore the ISVA accompanies clients to travel to the Centre. Often the Isle of Wight Crown Court is too busy to hear cases; therefore, clients require support to attend court off island.
