All relationships have conflict at times. Acknowledging that your words or actions have caused harm can be difficult, but help is available. Seeking support is the necessary first step on the journey towards healthier relationships.

Pathways to Change is a service designed to help individuals understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy actions associated with harmful behaviour. Participants will learn tools and strategies for more positive behaviours in their intimate relationships and make steps towards a better future.

This service offers an intervention for parents who want to strengthen their relationships with their children, model healthy behaviours, and co-parent more effectively. It equips parents with the tools and strategies needed to build emotional connections, set positive examples, and create a supportive child/parent environment.

Pathways to Change is an inclusive service available to all genders.

Frequently
Asked Questions

quote mark

Biggest change is my complete change in my behaviour. It does help a lot talking to other people that have the same problems as yourself. They don’t judge you at all, they are here to help and listen. It was a big step ahead and has changed my thought processes.

Who is it for?

Pathways to Change offers a range of tailored interventions for individuals who have used harmful behaviours in past or current relationships and are seeking to make positive changes. These interventions support participants in developing healthier relationship patterns and building a safer, more respectful future.

As part of this integrated service, we offer support to the partners or ex-partners of individuals engaging in Pathways to Change. We recognise the importance of addressing the needs of those who have experienced harm and ensure they are supported throughout the process.

Our service is inclusive and works with people of all genders.

Where is it available?

Pathways to Change is currently available in Southampton, Isle of Wight, and across all Hampshire boroughs and districts.

How can I refer myself or someone else?
  • Both self-referrals and agency referrals are accepted.
  • If either Children’s Social Care or Probation are involved, a referral should be made by the professional involved.
  • All agency referrals must be made with the client’s knowledge and consent.
  • If a client is awaiting a criminal outcome or is on bail, depending on circumstances, they may have to wait to start the programme.

How does the service work?

Participants meet with welcoming, knowledgeable practitioners who take time to understand their individual circumstances and backgrounds. This collaborative approach helps determine the most suitable intervention to support their needs. Depending on the recommended pathway, the service is delivered in a variety of accessible and appropriate community settings.

How are partners and ex-partners supported?

Alongside the main interventions, specialist practitioners work with partners or ex-partners of those referred to Pathways to Change. Engagement is optional and includes the opportunity to understand our interventions, access emotional support, wellbeing advice, and be signposted to appropriate community resources.

What approach do the interventions use?

Our interventions are grounded in a trauma-informed and client-centred approach, tailored to support the unique experiences and needs of each individual. We are proud to be a Silver Award Trauma-Informed Service, certified by One Small Thing, and hold RESPECT accreditation, demonstrating our adherence to over 100 standards of best practice.

We draw on evidence-based methods, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) principles and motivational interviewing, to equip participants with the tools, skills, and strategies needed to foster healthy, respectful relationships.

What other help is available?

Some people who have completed working with us and found it valuable now volunteer to support current participants. If participants want to speak to someone who has been through our service, our Pathways to Change mentors are available to answer any questions.

Practitioners can also guide participants toward additional support if needed, including referrals to counselling, substance misuse services, housing assistance, and other specialist resources tailored to their circumstances.

How might I talk to my clients about this service?

You can share with clients that our service helps people to ‘navigate towards healthier relationships’ when there is conflict that is causing problems at home.

Offer information on the service as an opportunity to access support and information to help people learn to communicate in more positive, healthy ways.

Suggest that people find that when they learn how to manage strong emotions before things escalate, they start to feel less overwhelmed. Pathways To Change offers tools and strategies to manage overwhelming feelings positively in order to develop healthy patterns of behaviour and communication
