Choose YOUR 30: Hampton Trust marks 30 years with call to action and community fundraising campaign
Domestic abuse affects one in four people in England and Wales at some point in their lifetime. At least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner. For every victim, there is a perpetrator — and yet for most of the last 30 years, changing the behaviour of those causing harm has been the least-funded and least-understood part of the response.
Today, on our 30th anniversary, we mark this milestone with the launch of Choose YOUR 30, a year-long community fundraising and awareness campaign as a reminder of how much remains to be done, and an invitation to Hampshire communities and agencies to play their part.
Hampton Trust was established in 1996 and named in honour of Gene Hampton, a well-respected Hampshire Magistrate, Chair of the Probation Committee and serving member of the National Parole Board. From the outset, the Trust was a local endeavour, funded and led in its earliest days by Hampshire Probation Service, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, and Hampshire Social Services. Within months of its formation, it was making headlines working with youth workers, health officials and police officers, borrowing rehabilitative techniques from as far afield as New Zealand’s Maori culture to find new ways of steering young people away from crime.
Thirty years on, Hampton Trust operates nationally, delivering award-winning behaviour change programmes, early criminal justice interventions, and professional training to organisations across England and Wales. In 2024/25 alone, we supported more than 3,000 service users, trained over 1,000 frontline professionals, and expanded our flagship CARA programme to 50% of police forces nationally.
Choose YOUR 30
To mark our 30th anniversary, we are launching Choose YOUR 30, a year-long campaign inviting individuals, workplaces and community groups across Hampshire to take on a personal challenge connected to the number 30. Whether that’s running 30 kilometres, performing 30 acts of community kindness, or taking on 30 cold-water swims – the only requirement is that the challenge means something to the person taking it on. We are inviting supporters to sign up to access a free campaign pack including challenge inspiration, fundraising guidance, and social media resources to share their journey.
Chantal Hughes, Chief Executive of Hampton Trust, said:
Thirty years ago, Hampton Trust was set up to develop interventions for young people and those using harmful behaviours to prevent reoffending. They were guided by the courage to use new approaches and by the belief that change was possible. That belief, and the evidence that has built up around it, is still at the heart of everything we do.
“But in thirty years, we have not ended domestic abuse. On average, one woman a week is still being killed in this country by a current or former partner, and hundreds of children in Hampshire are growing up in households where abuse is happening right now. While this anniversary is cause for celebrating everything we have achieved so far, it is also a moment to recommit. Choose YOUR 30 is our invitation to the partners and communities that have stood with us over three decades to continue to be part of our mission to break the cycle of abuse.”
